Frequently Asked Questions
It's normal to have questions when starting something new like counselling. Below are the answers to some frequently asked questions.
What's the difference between a counselling therapist, psychotherapist, a psychologist, and a psychiatrist?
In Canada, a Counselling Therapist (RCT or RCT-C) and a Psychotherapist are the same thing. They are both titles to describe mental health professionals who provide therapy. Provinces have different titles and regulatory bodies. In Nova Scotia title is Registered Counselling Therapist and the regulatory college is the Nova Scotia College of Counselling Therapists (NSCCT). RCTs are required to have Masters-level education in psychology, counselling theories, counselling skills, and therapeutic techniques

Psychologists have graduate-level education in psychology and are specifically trained in research, assessment, and providing mental health diagnoses. Psychologists can also provide counselling therapy/psychotherapy.

Psychiatrists are medical doctors with specific medical training focused on mental health. They can prescribe and manage prescriptions. Some may be trained in counselling therapy/psychotherapy as well.

Do you provide direct billing to insurance companies?
At this time, I am unable to provide direct billing to insurance companies. A detailed receipt will be provided for you to submit to your insurance company for reimbursement.
Prior to submitting the receipt, ensure that your insurance company covers services offered by a Registered Counselling Therapist or Certified Canadian Counsellor.

Do you have a cancellation policy?
Yes. 24 hours notice is required for any cancellation or appointment reschedule. If you cancel within the 24 hour period or you do not show up for your appointment then you will be charged the full rate of your session.

How many sessions will I need to attend?
Every person is different. Some clients attend therapy for 6-10 sessions, others attend 20+ sessions. It is also common for clients to attend many more sessions over multiple years.

You can work with your therapist to decide what feels best for you.
How can I file a formal complaint about my therapist?
If you are unhappy with your therapy services you can always provide feedback directly to your therapist. If you would rather make a formal complaint you can contact the NSCCT here
